The Straight Talk Galaxy S2 is a great phone, that’s for sure, but it’s a bit pricey. At the rate these phones come out, it can be hard to plunk down 300-400 bills on a device. I sure can’t blame you but perhaps you can find an excellent alternative and still enjoy the Straight Talk savings so today we will take look see at some excellent alternative Androids to fit any budget.
Straight Talk Samsung Proclaim – Find a Straight Talk Samsung Proclaim
First up is the most excellent Samsung Proclaim which is also a Galaxy class phone. This is an excellent alternative because it’s got some quite impressive specs. Now it wouldn’t be an alternative if it wasn’t priced right and at under 200 bucks, the Proclaim is priced at about half the price as the Samsung Galaxy S2. Most impressive is the 1ghz single core processor which will let you do just about everything the S2 does. This includes stuff like Netflix and other processor intensive games.
Aesthetically speaking, the Proclaim is a great looking device. It’s a bit more round than the S2 but it has the same button layout and types as well as the lovely silver bezel around the phone. The rear of the phone has a pleasing texture. Overall, the Proclaim looks just as good as the S2 in my humble opinion.
As with all things in life, you can’t have your cake and it too. With the savings, you sacrifice the large screen and get a lower resolution camera. That’s because the Samsung Proclaim has a 3.5″ screen and only a 3 mega pixel camera so this phone is more in the iPhone size territory. Of course, with a smaller screen you also get less resolution but don’t let that discourage you because the Proclaim still has an excellent display and it will actually fit in your pocket too! Other than that, there isn’t much else you sacrifice by going to the lesser expensive Proclaim. This is an excellent buy and it is a phone you will be proud to own.
Straight Talk Sim – Find a Straight Talk Sim
The Straight Talk Sim makes a fine alternative. You might be thinking, how is that an alternative when it’s not even a phone! The answer is simple, the Straight Talk Sim lets you pick your own device! Before you get too excited, the Straight Talk sim does come with what could be a significant set back, at least to some. Primarily the fact that unless you buy a fully unlocked device, you will not be able to use MMS on all devices. That said, there are 2 excellent devices where you can use the MMS! Those are the AT&T locked Nokia Lumia 900 and the Samsung Focus Flash. Both these devices have excellent specs in that both have 1ghz+ processors and both look great. The Samsung Focus Flash can be had used for a little over $100 on eBay and will work just like a Straight Talk bought phone. Additionally, be aware that the Straight Talk sim will only work with GSM phones.
The Nokia Lumia 900 makes fine alternative because it too has a large 4″ screen and a fast processor. Additionally, if you aren’t crazy about the Android OS, the Lumia comes with the Windows 7 OS. If you aren’t familiar with the Windows 7 OS, let me tell you that it is a wonderful operating system superior to Android in many ways. What’s really cool about the Windows 7 os is that it is sooo easy to use and looks outstanding. It’s also very fluid from screen to screen. App support isn’t as vast as Android but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing because the Windows app market has tighter quality controls so by in large, you don’t have to wade through all the crap apps that Google play has. Overall, you should really consider the Straight Talk Sim because it’s a cool little concept that’s been around in Europe and abroad for many years and is just starting to catch on here in the US.
Straight Talk finally has two solid high end Androids, so the question is, which is best. To be honest, both of these phones are excellent devices and quite comparable in most things that matter, but one has a slight edge in terms of specs, so we investigate or investigate the phones on the Straight Talk Website.
Dimensions and Screen
Both the Samsung and LG are large form factor phones with large 4″ screens so dimensions are similar. The LG Black, however has a slightly smaller screen and thus a smaller footprint. Despite that, both phones are wafer thin compared to other phones. This is good thing considering the large form factor. Screen wise, both boast large screens but the Samsung’s 4.5″ is clearly larger. Overall, they are close enough to each other to call this one a tie, except for the fact that the LG Black is noticeably lighter, weighing in at just 3.8 ounces. If having the smallest and lightest large screened device is important to you, the Black is probably your best bet. Check LG and Samsung availability
Scanning the specs, you will quickly see that both devices have powerful processors. The LG Black has fast 1.0 ghz single core device. While the Samsung S959g has a monster 1.2ghz dual core processor. You don’t need us to tell you which is better for running apps and games here. Obviously, you want the 1.2ghz dual core. For the most part, most people won’t be able to tell the difference on run of the mill apps. Apps like Netflix, will run excellent on both. So the deciding factor here is price. Neither phone is subsidized by Straight Talk so you wont get a discount here.
Both phones come with the cool dual camera design. The front camera resolution on both devices are comparable. The main camera, however, is a rather large disparity between the S959g and the LG Black. The Samsung has a mighty 8.0 mp camera, that’s 3 mp more than the venerable iPhone! The LG Black on the other hand, comes with a 5mp digital camera. Both have led flash. This again, puts the Samsung on top. All things being equal, namely price, then the Samsung is a clear winner here. The Samsung camera might just be good enough to become your main camera.
The Straight Talk Samsung s959g is an advanced large display device designed for the most demanding of users. What’s interesting about this device is that it is the first high end device by Straight Talk that can be run on a GSM network. Great news if you are in an AT&T and/or TMobile calling area.
